Getting a mortgage 'a priority' for young people
28 March 2008
The majority of people in their 20s have high hopes of having a home of their own by the time they hit 30.
A survey has revealed that 57 per cent of 20-somethings see getting a mortgage as a realistic goal, despite the current economic climate.
The figures, compiled by Alliance & Leicester, also showed that 49 per cent put getting married as a key priority and 42 per cent wanted kids before they were 30.
Richard Taylor, head of mortgage products at the lender, said: "Reaching 30 years old appears to be a landmark age for many people with it being set as a deadline for some major life events, like owning a property, getting married or starting a family.
"Being a home owner for the first time is something most of us desire, preferably earlier in life. Even in an uncertain housing market we're seeing those under the age of 30 feeling confident and optimistic about the prospect of getting onto the property ladder before they say goodbye to their 20s."
However, separate research shows that many homeowners are struggling with repayments and failing to keep up with rising living costs.
