Young men hit by high car insurance premiums

05 August 2008

Young male motorists are likely to pay much more for their car insurance premiums compared to their female counterparts, according to a new study.

Research by moneysupermarket.com revealed that a 17-year-old male will have to pay on average around £2,841 for motor insurance, which is almost £1,200 more than women of the same age can expect to pay.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com said: "Younger drivers eager to get behind the wheel this summer may be shocked by how expensive their insurance premiums are."

There are a number of measures young drivers can take to ensure they get cheaper car insurance premiums such as having a higher excess on a policy, claims Mr Gerrard.

"I advise taking a Pass Plus course, adding an older driver to your policy and consider buying an older car which may be easier to insure," he added.

According to moneysupermarket.com, 52 per cent of men pass their driving test first time compared to 42 per cent of women.
