Uninsured drivers not deterred
04 September 2008
Car insurance premiums will continue to rise because the penalties imposed on uninsured drivers are not enough to stop everyone, claims the AA.
According to the AA, there is a lot of car confiscation and car crushing that goes on for uninsured drivers but those who flout the rules can buy a vehicle for less than the cost of a car insurance policy.
Andrew Howard, head of road safety for the AA, said: "It obviously works in some ways for some people but not necessarily for everyone. It all depends on how far outside the law you're prepared to live."
Mr Howard claims that motorists are paying £30-50 a year extra to a panel which protects people from injuries and damage caused by uninsured drivers and it is the courts responsibility to impose stiffer penalties.
"The courts have eventually got to finally sit there and impose a realistic penalty on it," he added.
Research by Direct Line revealed that accidents involving uninsured drivers kill around 200 road users each year.
