Summer 'sees more break-ins'
25 March 2008
Homeowners are being warned to be alert as summer approaches with one insurer claiming that the warm weather attracts thieves.
According to Saga, the clocks going forward this weekend is also likely to hail a rise in the number of people making claims for stolen property.
The firm says that 42 per cent more theft claims are made during British Summer Time than in the winter months.
Paul Green, head of group communications at Saga, said: "As the evenings become lighter after the clocks go forward, people can become less security conscious, which results in a higher rate of burglaries.
"Lighter and warmer evenings often mean we spend more time outside and people leave windows open to let in the summer air.
"Many burglars take advantage of an open window, so ensuring yours are closed whenever you are not in the house is essential. It is also best to make sure you do not leave any items outside unnecessarily."
He added that homeowners who are planning on going on holiday this summer should be aware that thieves often strike when they know a home is empty so it is always best to make it look occupied.
