Students warned over home insurance
22 August 2008
With the university year fast approaching students are being advised to secure their property and protect their home insurance coverage.
Research by Newcastle Building Society revealed that students need to take greater care around the home as 35 per cent have left the house without locking the windows and 18 per cent have forgotten to lock the door when leaving the house.
Wendy Lee, commercial director at Newcastle Building Society, said: "Students returning to university need to think about home contents insurance in order to protect their belongings."
According to Ms Lee, these acts of forgetfulness could invalidate a house insurance claim and lead to an increase in the cost an insurance premium.
"Leaving your home without locking the doors or setting the alarm creates a risk for burglary but it can also affect your home contents cover should you come to claim," she added.
Fire damage is another potential threat to students as 57 per cent fail to check their smoke alarm battery, the research found.
