Sports fans only need regular travel insurance
04 June 2008
People who attend sporting events this summer only require ordinary travel insurance, according to an insurer.
With Euro 2008 and the Beijing Olympics both being held this year many sports enthusiasts will be travelling abroad but they only need to arrange basic holiday insurance cover, according to Norwich Union.
Sally Leeman, media relations manager with Norwich Union, said: "If a customer is travelling to a sports tournament purely as a spectator and in a leisure capacity, they would be able to arrange cover under a standard holiday insurance policy."
While alcohol is often consumed during sporting occasions people are urged to take safety precautions in order to protect their insurance cover.
"If death, injury, illness or disability occur as a direct result of you being under the influence of alcohol or exposing yourself to unnecessary danger your insurance claim won't be paid," said Ms Leeman.
Research by Gapyear.com revealed that 25 per cent of young holidaymakers travel either uninsured or underinsured.
