'Spend money on insurance not on treats', pet owners told
23 May 2008
Instead of lavishing their animals with luxuries, pet owners should protect their animal's health with insurance, claims an insurance company.
Dog owners spend on average £2,388 a year looking after their pets and with the credit crunch starting to tighten household budgets pet owners should take out insurance to avoid costly vet fees.
Asia Manzoor, a spokesperson for esure pet insurance, said: "Today's household pets are treated more like members of the family and this new attitude is reflected in the amount owners spend on their pet's lifestyle. Despite this, many pets remain uninsured."
Having a pet dog implanted with an identification micro chip will lower the cost of insurance premiums, according to esure.
"Getting your pet micro-chipped will not only reduce the cost of insuring your dog, but will also give dog owners the security that should their beloved pet go astray," said Asia Manzoor.
Research by Sainsbury's Finance revealed that over 11 million dog and cat owners have no pet insurance cover for their pets.
