Secure homes to protect premiums, warns insurance company

01 May 2008

Homeowners and tenants could reduce their insurance premiums by using "simple measures" to secure their homes, an insurance company has claimed.

By fitting burglar alarms and correct locks to doors and windows homeowners can reduce the risk of being robbed by an opportunistic burglar, Direct Line has advised.

Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line home insurance, said: "Insurance companies may charge higher premiums for homes in areas targeted by burglars. Investing in good quality locks for doors and windows will not only offer you peace of mind, but will also reduce your premiums."

When on holiday, homeowners should contact friends and neighbours and arrange for them to check on the property and collect mail as burglars are more likely to steal from a house they know is empty.

"If you are a member of the neighbourhood watch, you should inform your fellow members and neighbours that you will be away," said Lowe.

According to insurance company Endsleigh, homes in Nottingham, London and Bristol were most at risk from theft in the UK.ADNFCR-1395-ID-18576647-ADNFCR
