Private medical insurance grows in popularity
11 August 2008
An increasing number of people are choosing private medical insurance (PMI) due to fears over the current state of the NHS, claims Bupa.
Research by Bupa revealed that 73 per cent of people buy private medical health care because of the cleanliness of NHS hospitals, which was a rise of eight per cent on the previous year's figures.
The lack of a waiting list was one reason why 61 per cent of people would opt for private health cover while 59 per cent believe they will experience better quality of treatment.
Stephen Flanagan, commercial director of Bupa UK membership, said: "It's good to see that more people are seeing the benefits that PMI offers, with access to drugs and treatments not widely available on the NHS becoming increasingly important."
According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), more than seven million people in the UK now have some form of private health cover.
