Pets insured more than people
19 August 2008
A new study has found that in the UK the number of pets with heath insurance is greater than the number of people with private medical cover.
Research by Tesco Finance revealed that 23 per cent of the UK's pet population was insured compared to only 12.2 per cent of the British public with private health insurance.
Ewan McNeil, former president of the society of practicing veterinary surgeons, said: "We are a nation of animal lovers. I'm not surprised that pet insurance is becoming so popular - people will do everything they can to ensure the best for their pets.
According to Mr McNeil, it is increasingly important that animal lovers take out pet insurance as vet bills are an unnecessary expense during the credit crunch.
"Pet insurance helps owners choose the best treatment for their pets without worrying about costs," he added.
Britain is only second to Sweden as the country with the largest number of insured pets in the world, reports Tesco Finance.
