Older holidaymakers "foolish" not to take out insurance

08 May 2008

Tourists who are over 55 should still take out travel insurance despite it being more expensive, claims a travel association.

Affluent older travellers are now likely to take longer and more adventurous holidays abroad but should not be dissuaded from getting expensive travel insurance if they have existing health problems, say the Association of British Travel Agents.

A report by the Association of British Insurers revealed that tourists aged over 65 were three times more likely to make an insurance claim than those over 35, making it crucial for older tourists to have insurance.

Sean Tipton press officer at ABTA, said: "If you have a pre-existing medical condition and you decide not to take out insurance because of the fact that it’s more expensive then it's very foolish because you're more likely to need it than other people."

Research by the Alliance and Leicester revealed that 13 per cent of over 55-year-olds took five or more holidays per year.ADNFCR-1395-ID-18584383-ADNFCR
