Modifying a car will increase insurance premiums

03 July 2008

Motorists who modify their car will probably have to pay increased insurance premiums, according to Direct Line Car Insurance.

By modifying a vehicle, car owners are expected to enhance its speed, desirability and performance which will increase the likelihood of an insurance claim and raise the cost of premiums.

Jennifer Culley, spokesperson for Direct Line Car Insurance said: "Generally, any modifications to your car that increase the performance, value or its desirability to a thief will attract increased premiums as they may raise the risk, value or likelihood of a claim."

Modifications that improve a vehicles safety will not raise premiums although any alterations to a car must be done by professionals, claims the car insurer.

"Insurers will not generally penalise a customer for modifications that make your car safer or lower the risk of damage or theft," said Ms Culley.

Research by confused.com revealed that modifying a vehicle can increase a premium by up to 139 per cent, reported the Insurance Daily.ADNFCR-1395-ID-18667686-ADNFCR
