Military personnel 'should not pay for insurance'
17 June 2008
Soldiers serving in the armed forces should not have to pay their insurance premiums, according to a financial advisor.
While insurance companies recommended by the Ministry of Defence are expected to increase their premiums, according to reports, it is the responsibility of the government to provide insurance cover for their soldiers, claims Buckles Investment Services.
Richard Eling, investment director at Buckles Investment Services, said: "The government ought to be providing some kind of proper insurance for these people which doesn't come out of their pay. It's a bit rich to send someone to Iraq on £18,000 a year and then ask them to pay for their own insurance cover."
Soldiers going on duty should check their insurance cover is appropriate to the job they are doing.
"Seek out a specialist provider but read the small print and make sure it applies to the specific job you are doing," said Mr Eling.
According to statistics, 176 British soldiers have lost their life since the start of the Iraq war in 2003.
