It's 'easy' for homeowners to insure their holiday home
02 July 2008
Homeowners who own a second home should have no problem getting contents insurance for their property, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
While one in ten people do not have contents insurance on their second home, according to Zurich Private Clients, it is no more difficult to get home insurance for a second property than it is for a main home.
Malcolm Tarling, a spokesperson for the ABI, said: "It's no harder. There are specialist insurers around that will insure second homes. Obviously there is the issue of the value of your homes and security."
How long a holiday home is left unoccupied for will affect the price of the contents insurance premiums, claims ABI.
"They should make sure they don't have items in the property other than those that they need. Don't leave expensive items there unattended because that's asking for trouble," said Mr Tarling.
Research by Zurich Private Clients revealed that British holiday property owners have an average of £15,200 of contents in their second homes.
