'Insure valuable items individually' while on holiday
21 April 2008
Holidaymakers who are planning to jet off abroad with expensive items are being urged to consider insuring them individually.
According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), some insurance policies are limited in the amount of cover they offer and may not include items such as expensive jewellery.
Malcolm Tarling, spokesperson for the ABI, said valuable possessions should be given extra insurance as travel insurance only covers policyholders for a "limited amount".
"People may have wider, higher limits under their household policy if they have got all risks," he said.
"It's a question of checking your policy and checking if you have cover for items outside of the home under your household policy."
He added: "It is always sensible to read the policy to understand what you are covered for before you buy it."
Figures recently compiled by Sainsbury's suggest that as many as ten per cent of people heading overseas this year could travel without cover.
