Insurance premiums will be hit by drink driving
15 August 2008
Motorists risk a serious rise in their car insurance premiums if they are convicted of drink driving, claims Norwich Union.
Last year, research by Brake revealed that 19 per cent of 17 to 18-year olds admitted to driving whilst over the drink-drive limit, which would lead to a massive rise in the cost of their car insurance policy, according to a spokesperson for the insurer.
Erik Nelson said: "A drink-driving conviction will seriously impact your premium."
According to Mr Nelson, motorists need to declare previous driving convictions when applying for a car insurance policy or they risk invalidating it.
The best way for motorists to protect their car insurance premiums is to not drive at all after drinking alcohol, claims Mr Nelson.
"If you want a drink, consider taking a taxi or public transport, or having a designated driver if you are out with friends," he added.
The AA reported that the average car insurance premium had risen by around six per cent in the past year to £682.
