Insurance could rise for motorists using mobiles
11 April 2008
Insurance premiums could increase for drivers who are convicted of using their mobile phone while behind the wheel.
This week, Allianz Insurance revealed plans to increase the price of car cover by 30 per cent for motorists who have illegally chatted while driving.
The move is likely to see other companies follow suit and looks set to encourage people to avoid using their handset while on the road.
Using a mobile phone at the wheel without a hands-free set was banned by the government in December 2003 and carries a £60 penalty and three points.
Neil Walker, motor manager for Allianz, said: "By increasing the premiums for drivers with mobile phone convictions we are reinforcing the fact that this is a dangerous and needless act.
"If you are convicted of using a mobile phone while driving not only do you face a fine and points on your licence, you will also suffer the added financial burden of increased car insurance."
