Insurance companies should be notified before DIY schemes
23 June 2008
Homeowners should inform their insurance company before carrying out major DIY projects, according to Direct Line.
Research by Zurich revealed that 47 per cent of homeowners do not tell their insurance company of DIY plans and they run the risk of being underinsured or even having their insurance policy cancelled.
Qualified tradesmen should always be employed by homeowners before any complex renovation or redevelopment work is undertaken on a property in order to protect the home insurance policy, claims the head of Direct Line.
Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance for Direct Line, said: "We recommend that professional advice is sought before undertaking any major DIY work, such as knocking down walls or fitting kitchens or bathrooms."
People should always check with their insurance company as some need consulting even before minor DIY projects such as changing doors are started.
Research by Zurich revealed that 87 per cent of homeowners carry out DIY without even checking whether they were insured for the work or any resultant damage.
