Improve security and lower insurance premiums
18 July 2008
Homeowners can reduce their home insurance premiums by improving their security, according to Virgin Money.
Figures released by the Home Office revealed that domestic burglary rates have fallen by 59 per cent since 1995 but the fear of crimes is still prevalent so homeowners should increase security in their property to give better peace of mind.
Grant Bather, spokesperson at Virgin Money said: "The reality is that burglary rates are coming down and that fear of crime is often a bigger risk than crime itself."
By installing security devices such as an intruder alarm and securing locks on windows and doors as well as following safety measures like hiding valuables and leaving lights on, homeowners can reduce the cost of their insurance premiums.
"Relying on insurance and simple security measures are the best ways to protect yourself and give peace of mind," said Mr Bather.
Virgin Money claims homeowners can lower their insurance bills by joining a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme but only four per cent of people said they had.
