Homeowners urged to insure their holiday houses

15 July 2008

Damage to holiday homes can be "complicated and expensive" to sort out so they need to be insured, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA).

While one in ten people do not have insurance for their holiday homes, according to Zurich Private Clients insurance, they run the risk of a lengthy and complicated claims procedure if their property is damaged, argues BIBA.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at BIBA, said: "If you do get bad weather or any kind of incident then it could be extremely complicated and expensive to try and [put it right]."

Insurance for holiday homes is widely available and easy to obtain so homeowners should organise cover to avoid potential hassle.

"Our advice is to go to a broker because they can insure foreign properties, holiday homes and second homes. The cover is there and is actually fairly reasonably priced," said Mr Trudgill.

Research by moneysupermarket.com revealed that 40 per cent of property owners in the UK did not have home insurance.ADNFCR-1395-ID-18684475-ADNFCR
