Homeowners should tell their insurance company when undertaking DIY
05 June 2008
Homeowners should inform their insurance company before carrying out major DIY projects, according to insurers.
According to Zurich, 47 per cent of homeowners do not tell their insurance company of DIY plans and they run the risk of being underinsured or even having their insurance policy cancelled.
Neil Laird, home insurance manager of Sainsbury's Finance, said: "If people intend to make structural changes to their property they need to ensure they inform their insurer first."
People should always check with their insurance company as some need consulting even before minor DIY projects such as changing doors are started.
Rhiannon Harris, a spokesperson for Endsleigh, said: "We must be advised of any alteration of the risk, so this will include any DIY projects, in order that we may consider the continuation of cover in general."
Research by Zurich revealed that 87 per cent of homeowners carry out DIY without even checking whether they were insured for the work or any resultant damage.
