Holidaymakers will invalidate insurance with drunken behaviour
21 August 2008
British tourists risk invalidating their travel insurance through accidents caused by drinking alcohol, claims the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).
Diplomats and officials are meeting in the Greek island of Zanta to discuss an epidemic of drunken trouble among British tourists who experience accidents which would not receive a pay out from insurance companies.
Frances Tuke, spokesperson for ABTA, said: "Most insurance policies are not valid if the cause of an accident is because of drinking. That is the conditions that they set and that is what people need to be aware of."
According to Ms Tuke, there should be a crackdown on foreign bars which actively encourage drinking antics from young impressionable British tourists.
"There are lots of issues there that are of concern and the issue is that there are environments that facilitate that kind of behaviour in terms of the bars that do lots of free shots," she added.
Expedia's 2007 Best Tourist League found that the British were the worst behaved of all nationalities.
