Holidaymakers 'should have travel insurance for short breaks'

10 June 2008

Tourists should take out travel insurance regardless of the length of their holiday, according to an insurance group.

With the average travel claim costing £716, which is likely to rise by six per cent each year, holidaymakers should have travel insurance even for the shortest trips, according to Norwich Union.

Sally Leeman, media relations manager with Norwich Union, said: "Medical emergencies are the biggest single cause of travel claims. The cost of an injury or consequences of an illness that requires hospitalisation and then repatriation can leave a traveller thousands of pounds out of pocket."

Regular holidaymakers should have annual travel insurance as it is likely to save them money and it is ideal for spontaneous trips abroad.

"If you are likely to travel a few times a year consider taking out annual insurance," said Ms Leeman.

Research by Gapyear.com revealed that 25 per cent of young travellers travel uninsured or underinsured.ADNFCR-1395-ID-18631178-ADNFCR
