Holidaymakers 'should check home insurance policy'
25 February 2008
Holidaymakers leaving their house empty on a long holiday should check their home insurance policy to see how long they can leave their home unattended and still be covered, the AA warned.
According to research by Liverpool Victoria (LV=) the average home has £25,000 worth of content, and people going on holiday could leave their home vulnerable without cover when they go on holiday.
AA public relations manager Ian Crowder said: "If you are away for a long time typically over 30 consecutive days your insurer may want special terms imposed, such as guarantees that the house is being regularly inspected.
"Or they may impose an additional premium or reduce level of cover, or even not cover at all."
Burglary and theft accounts for 36 per cent of UK crime and costs the nation over £2.8 billion a year.
Home contents insurance can provide financial back up in the case of theft, but people must be aware of the terms.
