Holidaymakers 'should check car insurance'
13 February 2008
UK holidaymakers heading abroad in their car should make sure they know exactly what their car insurance policy covers before leaving home, suggested the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
Last year a survey by Zurich revealed that 28 per cent of Britons motoring abroad had not checked their policy to see if it was valid in the country they were visiting, while 43 per cent had not checked to see what the insurance policy actually covered.
ABI spokesman Malcom Tarling pointed out that, while most policies cover driving in the EU, they do not all offer the same level of coverage.
Insurers are obliged by law to provide a minimum level of coverage, but won't necessarily cover theft or accidental damage.
He added: "For those countries where there's a high accident rate, such as some of the Mediterranean countries Greece or Portugal for example you may pay more than if you were driving in France or Germany or Holland."
