Holidaymakers not taking out travel insurance

15 July 2008

British tourists are being urged to take out travel insurance in order to avoid paying costly medical bills, according to moneysupermarket.com.

While many foreign countries do not provide free medical treatment it is important to take out travel insurance as 81 per cent of British people fall ill on holiday, according to research by moneysupermarket.com.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Travel insurance is vital for claiming on cancellations, lost cash, public liability and providing emergency medical treatment."

Travel insurance should always be purchased no matter where the destination, despite only eight per cent of travellers taking out cover just for long-haul holidays, as problems can always occur, according to moneysupermarket.com.

"Whatever the destination I urge holidaymakers to insure themselves against unfortunate events that could turn their vacation in to a holiday nightmare," said Mr Gerrard.

According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the average cost of treating a broken leg in America is £24,000.ADNFCR-1395-ID-18684477-ADNFCR
