Holidaymakers at risk over travel insurance

07 August 2008

British tourists may not have appropriate health insurance cover when they holiday in Europe, according to American Express.

Research by American Express revealed that 2.3 million Britons who travelled to Europe in the last year did not take out travel insurance because they thought an European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) gave them sufficient.

Chris Rolland, head of American Express insurance services, said: "With so many Brits planning a summer holiday in Europe this month, travellers should be careful not to rely on EHIC."

According to Mr Rolland, EHIC cards will not cover tourists for delays, loss of baggage or cancellations so they should take out an independent travel insurance policy.

"EHIC cards are solely for emergency medical treatment in Europe and people must make sure that they have independent, quality travel insurance to ensure that they have comprehensive cover to avoid any unwanted financial difficulties," he added.

Research by Gapyear.com revealed that 25 per cent of young travellers travel uninsured or underinsured.
