Holiday homes should have insurance
08 August 2008
Owners of property abroad should ensure that all their contents are covered by home insurance, claims the AA.
Research by Zurich Private Clients revealed that one in ten people did not have insurance for their holiday homes and this is potentially dangerous as the average holiday home contains valuables worth £15,200.
Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, said: "When you're taking out insurance and you're looking at contents, it's important to make sure you've got sufficient cover for everything and that you do include everything."
According to Mr Crowder, homeowners need to take the necessary security precautions to keep their insurance policy valid as many leave their holiday properties empty for months.
"Common sense applies here there's a duty of care on every insurance policy. If, for instance, you've left the main window wide open you're not going to get a very sympathetic ear from the insurer," he added.
National statistics show that 278,000 households have second homes in Britain and 211,000 have second homes abroad.
