Ex-pats may need health insurance
22 July 2008
Following recent legislation people should ensure they have adequate health cover before moving abroad, according to an expatriate magazine.
Since last month unemployed foreign nationals living in Spain lost their right to health care if they did not possess either the E121 and E106 forms which protect the rights of retirees.
Rhiannon Davies, director of Shelter Offshore, said: "It really is worth looking into health insurance if you are unsure about the level of care you will be entitled to in your preferred destination of choice."
While medical bills can be extremely expensive in some countries it is essential that expatriates get health insurance before moving to a different country, claims Ms Davies.
"If you move to live abroad and cut all ties with the UK, don't automatically assume you can always fall back on the good old NHS," added Ms Davies.
According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the average cost of treating a broken leg in America is £24,000.
