Ensure your home is properly covered, warns experts
25 April 2008
Experts are urging homeowners to ensure they have proper home insurance cover and do not just opt for the cheapest policy.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) says that when consumers shop for cover it is critical that they read the small print and know exactly what it includes.
Some policies, for example, may not comprise important add-ons such as legal cover and insuring possessions even when you are outside the home.
Spokeswoman for the association Kelly Ostler-Coyle said: "Always shop around and base your decision on what product you're taking out and what cover it provides for you, and not necessarily the price of it.
"When you are taking out taking out your home insurance you don't just want to go for the cheapest."
She added that by doing this, "if anything happens you are completely covered".
Figures released last month by Lloyds TSB show that gardens are increasingly becoming targets for thieves as they often contain expensive tools and furniture.
Homeowners are advised to take out a home insurance policy that includes cover for garden equipment.
