Drivers 'should tell car insurance provider of trips abroad'
26 February 2008
Drivers should add calling their car insurance provider to the list of things to do before going abroad on holiday in their vehicle, according to the AA.
RAC foundation research has revealed that three million UK motorists drive off to the continent every year, and the AA advises that they should each check what exactly they are covered for before heading off.
EU rules demand that any UK car insurance covers accidents on the continent, though the only compulsory cover is third person.
"So if you hit another car or property or cause injury, your insurer will meet the third party costs, but not yours", said AA public relations manager Ian Crowder.
There are different types of cover, with some comprehensive policies including a fee-free 90 days of cover abroad, while others offer a few days cover, with any excess time away covered at a cost.
"So the message is, call your insurer in good time before you go. If your insurer does cover you, you can ask for a European Accident Claim Form which gives basic information in a range of languages, to enable you to gather names, addresses, insurance details, et cetera
of the other parties involved," added Crowder.
