Drivers abroad should call insurance immediately
25 February 2008
UK motorists driving their car abroad should follow the same procedures in case of an accident as they would at home, according to one provider.
Drivers who have the misfortune of being in an accident on the continent should take a photograph of the scene, record vehicle registration numbers and call their insurance provider "immediately", according to Ian Crowder of the AA.
The RAC has claimed that three million British motorists take their cars with them across the channel in ferry or train every year.
It also revealed that drivers are three times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident in Spain or Portugal than at home.
Mr Crowder warned: "If you are unfortunate enough to have an accident, do what you would expect to do in the UK. Take pictures of the scene if you can, take vehicle registration numbers, makes, colours remember that some lorries will have separate registration numbers for vehicle and trailer names and addresses, including any witnesses."
