Disabled travellers should check holiday insurance
18 June 2008
Disabled holidaymakers should check their travel insurance has the appropriate cover, claims a travel charity.
With around two million disabled people using air travel every year, according to Leonard Cheshire Disability, it is important to ensure that holiday insurance covers the use of medication and mobility aids.
Brian Seaman, head of consultancy at Tourism for All, said: "If you use a wheelchair or have any equipment, you need to find out if they are insured or not under the standard policy or if you need to take an extension to the policy to cover those items."
Disabled tourists should also make sure the airport they are travelling from meets their mobility requirements.
"You may need to ask a few questions about the facilities; even if it says it is accessible you should find out whether it meets your particular needs," added Mr Seaman.
Next month a new European regulation will mean it is the responsibility of the airport to meet disabled customers' needs, Leonard Cheshire Disability reports.
