Consumers should 'keep receipts'
27 February 2008
People with home insurance are responsible for making sure that their policy covers all of their items, according to one expert.
Home insurance customers should take active steps to ensure that their policy will reimburse them for their belongings in the case of loss, theft or destruction.
According to a spokesman for uSwitch, consumers should make an inventory and keep receipts, as they are even better than photographs, as well as be aware of the limits of their policy.
The spokesman said: "An inventory would be a good idea. Also, photographs of certain items might be a good idea, and you need to have an idea of what they're actually worth. A lot of people don't actually know what the things they have are actually worth."
But with bicycles, cameras and TVs home insurance customers would be better off keeping their receipts, he added.
For high value products some insurers will ask to be informed about it beforehand.
The spokesman added: "An insurance company will look at single high-value items and they may refuse to cover them in the event of a claim if they were not informed about it beforehand."
