Consumers 'don't have to have home insurance'

14 April 2008

Homeowners need to prioritise what insurance they need depending on how much they can afford, it has been claimed.

According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association, consumers need to make a choice over what their main concerns are when making a decision on whether they can pay for a home contents insurance policy.

Peter Staddon, head of technical services at the association, said: "What the consumer needs to do is prioritise. They need to have the conversation.

"If they decide that they do want to dispense with insurance that is fine, but they cannot turn around when their house is flooded and they have lost everything and they have got no money to replace it."

Recent figures from Zurich Insurance show that there are still large numbers of people who are living without home insurance.

The data shows that around £8 billion of goods are not protected against bad weather or crime.ADNFCR-1395-ID-18551176-ADNFCR
