'Check car insurance before going abroad'
19 February 2008
UK motorists driving their vehicles in Europe will have a certain degree of insurance cover, but they should check the exact extent of their policy before driving on the continent, according to an industry professional.
Anybody who has UK car insurance will automatically be covered for third party while abroad in their car, but some people mistakenly believe they automatically have comprehensive cover.
Ian Crowder, public relations manager of the AA, said that not checking what cover motorists have could land them with an unpleasant set of expenses if they have an accident while in the EU.
He noted that as well as paying to fix the car, motorists could have to pay to get the car removed, which would not be covered unless the driver had taken out comprehensive cover before going abroad.
His advice was: "If you're thinking of taking a car into the continent, you do need to check with your insurer."
Every year three million British motorists take the ferry or Channel tunnel to the continent, according to the RAC Foundation.
