Backpackers spend big when travelling
13 June 2008
Backpackers are willing to spend large amounts of money when on their travels, according to the editor of a travel book.
People are prepared to save up in advance rather than work while on their travels in order to take advantage of the experience with research by Insure and Go showing that the average backpacker spends £3,764 whilst abroad.
Tom Hall, travel editor at Lonely Planet, said: "People are recognising the value of saving up a little bit more before they go and one of the old adages of going on a big trip is: 'The more money that you have, the better time that you'll have.'"
Alongside insurance, transport and food, travelers are keen to spend money on memorable activities which can prove expensive.
"It's about the experiences that you have out there and sometimes they cost a little bit of money," said Mr Hall.
Research by Insure and Go revealed that 8.3 per cent of backpackers spend more than £10,000 on their travels.
