Using credit cards can protect against ticket scams
21 August 2008
Customers who buy tickets online should pay by credit card as they can claim compensation if they fall victim to tout scams, claims the Trading Standards Institute.
It was recently reported that many people lost their money to SOS Ticketmaster after tickets were bought for V and Reading Festivals on debit cards from ticket touts but never delivered.
According to a spokesperson for the Trading Standards Institute, when you compare credit cards to debit cards is safer to use a credit card when buying online.
"If you pay by debit card you won't get your money back but, if you pay by credit card you'll probably be able to claim it back from your credit card company," said Tony Northcott.
Ultimately the safest thing to do is not to use websites that could be deemed untrustworthy, claims Mr Northcott.
"The bottom line is don't buy from ticket touts," he added.
Customers can claim losses on transactions between £100 and £30,000 under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974.
