Online shopping 'safe at approved sites'
31 March 2008
Despite negative reports of online credit card fraud, buying products on the internet should not be a cause for concern when shopping on an approved site, according to online safety expert Shopsafe.
With Britons ringing up yet again record sales figures shopping online, Shopsafe has said that UK consumers need not be worried about the safety of their transactions.
A recent survey by credit protection firm CCP found that UK shoppers will spend on average £72,000 over their lifetime online and that 58 per cent of young shoppers were not put off by shopping at an unsecured site.
Simon Crisp, director of Shopsafe, offered some simple advice for consumers worried about the security of their credit cards online.
"The banks are promoting schemes now, which is rather like chip and pin but the online version is SecureCode. Use a safe website that's been recommended to you so its one that's got a badge of approval," he said.
Recent figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-retail sales index have shown online retail spending to be up 46 per cent on the year between February 2007 and 2008.
