London size 'behind card fraud hotspot status'
21 February 2008
The sheer size of London and its population is the reason that the UK's capital is the worst city for card fraud according to the association for payment clearing services (Apacs).
A recent survey showed that almost a third of Londoners had been victims of card fraud, making the capital the hotspot.
However, it is not Londoners' lifestyles or carelessness that has given it the dubious distinction, but the volume of transactions the city sees.
Apacs spokesman Mark Bowerman said: "We would agree that London is the fraud hotspot in the UK but the fact of the matter is there are more cards in issue in London and therefore more transactions and more retail outlets in London. They are the factors behind the fact."
Provided cardholders follow common sense, they can minimise the chances of being victims of fraud wherever they live.
While certain types of fraud start somewhere, it is not long before they spread.
Mr Bowerman said: "Cash machine fraud, the very first time that happened in the UK, that did start off in London, but that's a few years ago and now it has spread all over the country."
