Everyone is at risk from ID theft, warns Equifax
09 June 2008
ID fraud has "no boundaries" and everyone should be aware of the risks, according to Equifax.
While people in middle England think they will not be affected by ID theft, fraudsters are more likely to target them as they have reasonable incomes and easy access to credit.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director at Equifax, said: "Most people tend to think that crime is down in the lower end of society - in the less desirable end of society."
Older consumers should be aware that ID fraud is not just about stealing someone's credit profile it is also about gaining access to savings and bank accounts, claims Mr Munroe.
"They've been targeting all different sectors of society from deceased people to older people and middle-aged groups. Those are the people who will give them the best pickings," said Mr Munroe.
Research by Experian revealed that the number of fraud cases they deal with increased by 66 per cent on the previous year.
