Credit card users 'need to be careful'
06 February 2008
Credit card customers can take simple steps to reduce the risk of being victims of fraud, according to a security expert.
Life assistance and protection firm CPP revealed that London was the location worst affected by credit card and debit card fraud and theft and offered customers tips for staying safe online and in the real world.
The CPP revealed that 20 per cent of Londoners have had their credit card stolen, 28 per cent have been victims of credit card fraud, and 33 per cent of them have become victims after fraudsters got their details over the internet.
Danny Harrison, a security expert with the firm, said: "You need to be careful where you keep your cards; how many cards you carry around with you; keeping your card in view when you are using it."
Banks and payment organisations have been increasing their security measures, with innovations such as chip and pin protecting the use of cards in real stores and pocket sized password key generators helping to establish a customer's identity online.
And it is important to make sure that people are as careful online as they are offline.
Mr Harrison said: "It's the same when you are online - you need to keep your anti-virus software and firewall software up to date and also consider which websites you are buying from when shopping online. How do you know that they are a genuine company? Do they have a security symbol the little padlock?"
