Credit card clone warning
14 March 2008
Britain's overseas tourists are being warned to be vigilant this Easter holidays after a steep rise in credit card fraud, creditman.biz is reporting.
With methods for obtaining data from credit cards becoming more sophisticated, holders should guard against fraud using a few simple rules such as limiting the number of credit cards taken abroad, never letting the card out of your sight or letting a waiter walk away with it.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director of Equifax, said that the hassle of having to chase up credit card companies after being defrauded far outweighed the need to show extra caution.
"With ID fraud as a result of card cloning taking hundreds of hours to rectify, clearly the best advice is to be ultra cautious with credit cards when abroad
The fact is that the methods by which cloning is perpetrated are becoming more sophisticated, with a number of cases highlighted to us in the last few months," he warned.
Identity theft is one of the most far reaching consequences of credit card fraud, with the potential of many years of having to fight to have your name cleared.
