Consumers urged to protect credit card details

04 August 2008

With fraudsters becoming more advanced, people need to do more to ensure the safety of their credit cards, claims Equifax.

According to CIFAS, there has been a 157 per cent increase in the number of facility takeover fraud cases, a process which involves criminals impersonating an individual in order to control an existing credit card account, so consumers need defend their account details at all times, claims the external affairs director at Equifax.

Neil Munroe said: "There are lots of things you probably need to do because there is an increasing number of ways in which fraudsters are trying to get information from you."

Credit card owners should regularly check their credit report to ensure they are not a victim of fraud, advises Mr Munroe.

"Good practice is to look at it [your credit report] once or twice a year just to make sure that nothing untoward is happening," he added.

Research by CIFAS revealed that overall fraud cases rose by 14 per cent from January to June this year.
