Consumers told to improve credit card safety
30 May 2008
Consumers need to make it harder for thieves to perpetrate credit card crime, according to trade association APCAS.
While people have become more aware of credit card safety with the introduction of Chip and PIN, consumers need to be aware of how to protect their PIN numbers further.
A spokesperson for APACS, said: "It's about reminding people about the simple things they can do to enhance the security measures that are already in place. This goes back to being mindful of your cards, shielding your PIN, checking your bank statements."
For enhanced credit card safety, consumers should never have the same PIN number for more than one card, claim APACS.
"Never disclose your numbers to anyone, shield your PIN when inputting it to the machine, and never tell anyone your passwords or write them down, keep them in your wallet or close to your cards," said the spokesperson.
Research by CPP revealed that London is the worst location for credit card theft as 20 per cent of residents have had their credit card stolen.
