Saving becoming sexy?
24 April 2008
A financial expert has claimed that more young people are starting to put money away as savings become "sexy".
Emma Byrne said that British people were now starting to prioritise saving cash and that more careful thought was needed when deciding which account was the most suitable.
Her comments follow research which shows the 18 to 35 age group were taking saving much more seriously than the over 55s.
The study from Kaupthing by Opinium Research showed that men felt they needed an average of £101,999 to be financially secure whereas women said they needed £82,193.
"I think [something that is] very encouraging, and is on a more positive note, is that there are a third of Brits who, when they have some cash left over at the end of the month, are moving the spare cash into a savings account," Ms Byrne said.
"Now that's great but what about the two thirds that aren't? We'd really encourage people, once they've sorted out their monthly incoming and outgoings, to go and put that money into a savings account."
