Online banking population hits 11m

28 April 2008

Almost 11 million people used an internet banking account in January accounting for one third of the total UK online population.

A report by comScore revealed that 10.9 million people now bank online, with Royal Bank of Scotland, Natwest, Lloyds TSB, Halifax and HSBC all having over two million customers each.

Royal Bank of Scotland was Britain's most popular online bank with 2.9 million users but Lloyds TSB was the most frequently visited with 2.8 million customers logging on almost seven times a month.

Despite the rising popularity of internet banking research shows that only 52 per cent of credit card users feel confident shopping online.

A rise in banking viruses designed to steal account details has fuelled consumer concern says internet security firm F-Secure.

Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at F-Secure, told onlyfinance.com: "Consumers need to be aware of threats when banking online, but that is not to say that they should not do it."

Online customers are urged to stop a transaction immediately if they have any doubts over a website.ADNFCR-1395-ID-18571086-ADNFCR
