Online banking increases in popularity
25 July 2008
An increasing number of Britons are beginning to bank online as the process becomes more accessible, according to new figures.
Research by APACS revealed that the number of consumers banking online has risen to over 21 million which is a 505 per cent increase from 2007 indicating how confident people are with the system.
Sandra Quinn, director of communications at APACS, said: "The fact that the number of people banking online now exceeds 21 million is testament to how easy, convenient and safe this way of banking is."
APACS expects more people to use online banking for payments in the future but warns consumers to ensure they have anti-virus software to protect against fraudsters.
"We strongly urge banking customers to make sure they remain wary of online scams such as unsolicited emails claiming to be from their bank, and to only use a fully protected PC," said Ms Quinn.
Online banking fraud accounted for £22.6 million in 2007, according to industry figures.
