More families cannot afford holidays
28 May 2008
Millions of families will be unable to afford a holiday this year due to the credit crunch, according to the Family Holiday Association (FHA).
Rising food and fuel costs coupled with higher mortgage payments means that a rising number of families do not have the necessary disposable income to spend on a vacation away from home.
John McDonald, the director of the FHA, said:" Something like two and a half million families will not be able to afford a simple one week break away from home this year."
As more families cannot afford a holiday, the government should intervene to provide support as holidays benefit society as a whole, claims the FHA.
"I think holidays are really important for the well being of both the children and the parents, the family unit and the local community and society in general," said Mr McDonald.
Research by moneysupermarket.com revealed that one in six British holidaymakers is thinking of cancelling their plans and staying at home this year.
