Homeowners can save money by growing their own food

05 June 2008

Homeowners can significantly cut down on their food bills by growing their own produce, according to a horticulture expert.

With food costs rising and household budgets being hit by the credit crunch, homeowners can take advantage of their garden by growing their own food, claims Carrie Pailthorpe from organic growing charity Garden Organic.

Ms Pailthorpe, a horticulture expert at Garden Organic, said: "As fruit and vegetable prices soar, growing your own will increasingly become the answer. It is more cost effective and a viable alternative to buying produce in the supermarket."

While growing fruit and vegetables will not make a person self sufficient, using even the smallest space to grow food will save a considerable amount of money.

"Whether it's in an allotment, a small vegetable patch or just a few window boxes, the produce grown will certainly save pounds rather than pence," said Ms Pailthorpe.

According to the Organic Centre for Wales, sales figures for organic food were estimated to have increased by £1,937 million in 2006.ADNFCR-1395-ID-18624664-ADNFCR
